Zanda Mortice Lock

A mortice lock is a locking mechanism fitted into a pocket, or 'mortice', cut into the edge of your door. Because the lock body sits inside the timber or composite door itself rather than surface-mounted on the face, it provides superior structural support and resistance against forced entry.

How does a mortice lock work?

• Latch function: The latch is retracted by a knob or lever handle from either side of the door.
• Deadbolt function: The deadbolt is extended or retracted using a key from the outside, or a turn knob (snib) from the inside.

What is the difference between a mortice lock and a normal lock?

A standard rim lock or cylindrical lock mounts on the surface of the door or through a small cross-bore hole. A mortice lock requires a deeper pocket recessed into the door edge. This internal fit means the lock body is protected by the surrounding door material, making it harder to lever out or tamper with.

How do I know if I have a mortice lock?

• Look at the edge of your door, on the latch side.
• If you see a visible metal faceplate sitting flush with the timber edge, fixed with screws, you have a mortice lock.
• A surface-mounted lock, like a rim lock, sits in a box bolted directly onto the flat surface of the door's inside face.
