How Do I Know If My Door is Installed Correctly?

How Do I Know If My Door is Installed Correctly?

Mark Smith |

Problems in door installation often immediately appear. As a result, if you don’t see any problems right away, it’s likely that your door was installed correctly.

However, there are cases when problems only appear later on. This happens when the installation was not secure enough or the measurements are wrong. This results in persistent problems that can annoy you or even make you think that the new door needs replacement.

How do you tell if your door is installed correctly?

To ensure proper installation, you should look for the following problems:

  • Creaking or squeaking sounds
  • Door is slightly difficult to open or close (e.g. you might still need to gently push the door for it to properly close)
  • Scratches, lines and other marks on the floor (the door’s path when it closes or opens)

Actually, those are just symptoms of problems with incorrect installation. The causes are often related to:

  • Wrong measurements
  • Door is planed too much or too little (shaving off some of the wood material for smoothening or better fit)
  • Poor frame installation
  • Wrong hardware (knob, lock, hinge, handle)

Can you still easily fix it?

In some cases, you can still easily fix it if you plane the door. This might help it better with the frame (and make it smooth for you to close or open the door without the need to force it). Tightening of the screws and attachments of the hinges, locks and other hardware might also do the trick.

However, there are also cases when you have to start all over again. You might have to buy a new door (it was planed too much so it’s impossible to bring back the shaved off material). Wrong measurements might also make it impossible to do a quick fix.

As a result, it’s essential that the job is done right the first time. The measurements should be accurate and that the fitting is perfect. This can be done by experienced professionals and specialists who already know everything that can go wrong with installing a door.
