How to Buy Doors in the Black Friday Sale Without Getting the Size Wrong

Bay Breeze 2-in-1 entrance door from Complete Doors

Mark Smith |

Black Friday is a good time to buy a door, as long as it's the right size. Measure now, before the sale opens, and you can order on the day knowing it will fit.

Key takeaways

  • Measure this week, not on sale day. Ten quiet minutes with a tape measure is all it takes.
  • Know whether you're quoting the door, the frame or the opening. They are three different sizes.
  • Check height, width and thickness on the product page. Not every design comes in every size.
  • Every order of $1,500 or more earns a free fuel voucher in the Black Friday sale, up to $100.
  • Last orders for Christmas delivery are Friday 11 December on doors with a 7 to 9 working day lead time.

Why size matters more in a sale

A door that doesn't suit your frame means another order and another wait. In late November that wait runs straight into Christmas. Our suppliers close from about 20 December to 20 January, so a reorder placed late can sit until they reopen.

The fix is simple. Do the measuring before the sale, so the only decision left on the day is which door you like best.

Door, frame or opening: know which one you're measuring

The door is the leaf that opens and closes. The frame is the jambs, head and sill that hold it. The opening is the hole in the wall the frame sits in. The door is the smallest of the three and the opening is the largest.

When a product page says "820mm door", it means the door leaf. If you're keeping a frame that's square and sound, you need the door size. If you're replacing the frame as well, the opening is what counts.

Write which one you measured at the top of your notes. It saves a lot of back and forth.

Measure this week: the ten-minute checklist

  1. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the frame. Use the smallest figure.
  2. Measure the height on the left, centre and right, from the finished floor to the underside of the head. Use the smallest.
  3. If new tiles or timber are going down, measure to the new floor level.
  4. Measure both diagonals. If they differ noticeably, the opening is out of square, and your installer needs to know.
  5. Measure the jamb depth, the width of the frame through the wall.
  6. Stand outside and note the hinge side and whether the door opens in or out.
  7. Note the sill and any step down.
  8. Take photos: a wide shot, plus close-ups of the hinges, lock and sill.

Our full guide to front door sizes in Australia walks through each step.

Check the size options on the product page

Most Australian front doors are 2040mm high. Taller openings take 2340mm or 2400mm doors. Common single-door widths are 820mm, 870mm, 920mm and 1020mm, and wide and pivot doors go well beyond that.

Sizes vary between ranges, so check the exact options on each product page before you add a door to your cart. Entrance doors are thicker than internal doors too, and the thickness has to match your frame rebate, hinges and lock.

If you're ordering sidelights or a fanlight with the door, measure the whole opening, door plus lights, and confirm the setup on the product page.

Work out your fuel voucher before you check out

The Black Friday sale runs from Friday 27 November to midnight Tuesday 1 December (Sydney time), and our email list gets early access from Wednesday 25 November. Orders of $1,500 or more earn a free fuel voucher at the highest tier they reach:

Your order Fuel voucher
$1,500 or more $25
$2,500 or more $50
$3,500 or more $75
$4,500 or more $100

Spend counts the goods in your order after any discount and before delivery and transit insurance, GST included. It's one voucher per order, emailed to you by Complete Doors after you order.

If you're close to a tier, hardware for the same door counts towards it.

Bay Breeze 2-in-1 doors are 10% off

From Wednesday 25 November to Tuesday 1 December, our Bay Breeze 2-in-1 entrance doors (an entrance door and screen door in one) are 10% off, taken off automatically at checkout. Clearance and sidelights are excluded.

The fuel voucher counts the price after the 10%, so check which tier your order lands in.

Trade buyers

From Monday 23 November, trade account holders get a free stainless steel Roberta pull handle with every entrance door over $1,000, on top of the fuel voucher. Two qualifying doors get two pulls. Measure every opening on the job before you order, and send us the photos if anything looks out of square.

Order in time for Christmas

Last orders for Christmas delivery are Friday 11 December on doors with a 7 to 9 working day lead time. Doors with longer lead times ship when our suppliers reopen in late January.

From Wednesday 2 December, the free Roberta pull opens to everyone, one per entrance door over $1,000.

Not sure? Ask before you order

Send us your measurements and photos and we'll sense-check them, or call 1300 000 171. Our DoorVision visualiser shows a door on a photo of your own home, which is a quick way to check the proportions before you buy.

When you're ready, the Black Friday page has the offer in one place.
