Every door we create is meticulously designed and crafted

Our timber doors are made with the finest, sustainably-sourced timbers. They’re kiln-dried and moisture tested to ensure strength and rigidity. Designed for weather-protected entranceways, they aren’t suitable for extended periods of direct rain or sun.

Timber Types

Parkwood’s solid timber doors are crafted from a range of sustainable timbers that are made to be reliable for joinery. Providing options within everyone’s budget while offering a variety of options in colours and grains to suit almost any home design.

Depending on the style, exterior paint quality doors are made with exterior grade plywood with a vee groove. Exterior stain quality doors have TGV boards Ex 100×25 (dependent on style).

  • Western Red Cedar

This product is highly sought after worldwide because of its beautiful Canadian forest origins. Its rich red colour, superior stability, and variety of grains and shades make it popular with discerning home builders everywhere. We are getting ‘stripy cedar,’ which means we have an array of different colours on one board. The stripe appearance can be toned with the application of light stain.

Note: You can choose between stain quality (to be stained) and paint quality (to be painted).

  • Emberwood

A timber option that combines stability, resistance, and durability.
With a rich chocolate-brown tone and an even grain, engineered lamination lines finish off each surface nicely. Computer-monitored kilns perform thermal modification of Emberwood. With its laminated structure, this patent-protected product is even stronger. The individual pores of the timber will not absorb moisture anymore, so it will not move or change like other natural products.

Note: You can choose between stain quality (to be stained) and paint quality (to be painted).

  • Radiata Pine

The pine used at Parkwood is precision sawn and kiln dried, then dressed on all four sides. This process achieves dimensional stability. The trees are carefully selected, managed, and processed to produce a strong and reliable product. Emberwood is recommended for oversized doors because of its stability.

  • Rosewood

A reliable hardwood for joinery, it ranges in darker colours from yellow-brown to gold and red-brown. It has remarkable physical beauty and a fantastic range of uses and durability, matched only by timbers that are more expensive or do not possess the same physical attraction or working qualities.

Which Is Better? Painting Or Staining?

We’ve outlined the differences to help you make the right choice for your home. Learn about the difference between paint-quality and stain-quality timbers here:

Staining Quality Timbers

Stain-quality (SQ) timber is a popular option for those wanting a timber door, as it’s the option that best lets the natural look of the timber shine through, which is often a big factor in choosing a timber door in the first place.

SQ timber can be stained, and the stain will change the colour of the timber but leave the grain patterns largely untouched to allow the natural look of the timber to be the main feature.

The success of staining will depend on the porosity of the timber, which is why cedar is a great option, as it’s a soft wood with a light colour that effectively absorbs the stain. American White Ash when stained is a very attractive option that is aesthetically pleasing and absorbs wood stains well.

Paint Quality Timbers

If you’re looking to significantly change the look and feel of your timber door, i.e. move it away from its natural state, you’ll want to go with paint-quality (PQ) timber. This type of timber can be painted to any number of colours or finishes, which means it’s popular with those looking to make a statement but will disguise the look of the timber underneath.

It’s important to be aware, however, that PQ timber can come with certain characteristics, most PQ doors have finger joints, lamination’ or bog/filler, this prevents the timber from looking good if stained. It is also important that you ensure that the door is painted correctly.

For an interior PQ timber door, they tend to have MDF/customwood panels.

As always, when it comes to choosing how to treat your front door, it’s best to engage an expert who can help you determine the best option for your particular door, material and circumstances.
